PERF Members Are in the News Regarding Two Issues: Gun Violence and Immigration Enforcement

Below are links to two articles in the April 28 edition of the New York Times, with related materials.

The first article is about a session at PERF's Annual Meeting on April 26 regarding the use of firearms in homicides, robberies, and aggravated assaults. PERF wishes to thank the six police departments that provided information for an in-depth analysis of all of the gun crimes committed during a single week last year: Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Austin, San Diego, Philadelphia, and Toronto. PERF thanks all of the police departments that responded to a gun crime survey that served as a basis for the discussions, and to the police officials and ATF executives who participated in the Annual Meeting session. See also a link to a PERF Powerpoint that was used at the gun violence session.

The second New York Times article is about the formal response of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Director John Morton to a report issued last September by the Task Force on Secure Communities. The 14-member Task Force was chaired by PERF Executive Director Chuck Wexler and included 5 PERF members: Philadelphia Police Commissioner and PERF President Charles Ramsey; Las Vegas Sheriff Douglas Gillespie; Tucson Police Chief Roberto Villasenor; Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez; and Harris County, TX Sheriff Adrian Garcia. ICE Director Morton created the Task Force because ICE recognized that there are significant concerns in many cities about how Secure Communities functions. The Task Force produced a tough assessment of the program and specific recommendations to improve the operation of Secure Communities and increase its credibility with the public. In his formal response, Director Morton stated that ICE agrees with nearly all of the Task Force's recommendations, and he outlined steps that ICE is taking to implement them. The full texts of the Task Force Report and Director Morton's response are included below.

PERF Statement Regarding Interim Police Chief Search in Sanford, Fla.

Following is a statement by PERF Executive Director Chuck Wexler regarding PERF's role in assisting the City of Sanford in identifying candidates who can be considered for the position of interim police chief:

The Police Executive Research Forum has been asked by Sanford City Manager Norton N. Bonaparte, Jr. to assist the city in identifying candidates who may be considered for interim police chief. PERF has assisted more than 100 jurisdictions as they have sought to identify candidates for top law enforcement executive positions--most recently in Denver and Corpus Christi, TX, and earlier in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Houston, Dallas, Minneapolis, Boston, Charleston, SC, and other cities.

PERF has a 35-year track record of developing best practices and facilitating discussions on the critical issues facing police departments. This involves considerable experience working directly with police chiefs and communities across the nation to explore the issues they are facing. Recent projects have included research on reducing police use of force, as well as improving the police response to sexual assault crimes. Through programs such as PERF's Senior Management Institute for Police, we work closely with current and aspiring police executives. And police leaders often ask PERF to assist them in taking on difficult challenges with regard to reviewing management practices, implementing crime reduction efforts, and providing technical assistance.
